Hanging Rock is on the north side of Roanoke in Salem at exit 40 at I-81, then north.

The layout is along hilly and sloping, broad fairways defined by old-growth hardwood trees. Sand bunkers are primarily greenside, and a pond and a stream impact play on several holes. There are four sets of tees, from 6,828 yards down to 4,463 yards, with the white tees at 6,222 yards, 69.5/120, course/slope ratings, designed by Russell Breeden in the early 1990s.
