Birdwood is located off U.S. Route 250 just west of Charlottesville, is owned and operated by the University of Virginia, and is home to the Cavaliers' men's and women's golf teams.

The front nine is open along generous landing zones and straightforward approaches, while the back is over rolling terrain along tree-lined fairways with multiple water hazards and sand bunkers. It's in a scenic setting on a 500-acre tract of natural land in an Audubon Certified Sanctuary with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains throughout the round. The layout was designed by Lindsay Ervin in 1984 with a 2019 update by David Love III and plays to an overall yardage of 7,116 yards, 74.5/136, course/slope ratings with five shorter tees. There is also the Nest, a par 3, 6-hole short course.
